How to Use ChatGPT to Send Texts in Apple Messages (Mac Only)
Learn how to connect ChatGPT with Apple Messages using Shortcuts to draft, polish, and send AI-powered text messages on your iPhone.
ChatGPT can read your Apple Messages conversations and send texts on your behalf. The important qualifier, and the one most write-ups skip: this works on an Apple silicon Mac, not on your iPhone.
If you came here looking for a way to have ChatGPT send iMessages from an iPhone, that is not what this feature is, and the iPhone integration that does exist does something different. Both are covered below.
What actually exists, on which device
| ChatGPT desktop app (Mac) | ChatGPT + Apple Intelligence (iPhone) | |
|---|---|---|
| Can read your conversations | Yes — iMessage, SMS and RCS | No |
| Can send a message for you | Yes, with your approval | No |
| Can help you write text | Yes | Yes, via Writing Tools and Siri |
| Requirement | Apple silicon Mac | Apple Intelligence-capable iPhone |
The iPhone integration is a writing and answering aid. It does not get access to your Messages history and it does not send messages autonomously.
The Mac setup: ChatGPT’s Apple Messages plugin
On Apple silicon Macs, the Apple Messages plugin in the ChatGPT desktop app can search your iMessage, SMS and RCS conversations, and prepare or send messages through Messages.
Requirements:
- A Mac with Apple silicon — Intel Macs are not supported
- The ChatGPT desktop app for macOS
- Messages signed in and working on that Mac
Enable the plugin from within the desktop app and grant it access to Messages when macOS asks. macOS gates this behind its own permission prompt, which is the checkpoint that matters — if you never see it, the plugin has no access regardless of what is toggled inside ChatGPT.
The approval step
By default, ChatGPT asks you to approve the message and the recipients before sending. Leave that on.
It is the difference between an assistant that drafts and one that acts, and message sending is not an undoable operation — there is no recall once it has gone to someone’s phone.
What you can reasonably ask it
- Search your history: finding the address someone sent you months ago, without scrolling.
- Summarise a long group thread.
- Draft a reply in a specific tone, then review before it goes.
The search case is the one that genuinely beats doing it by hand. Drafting is convenient; retrieval across years of threads is something the Messages search field is bad at.
The iPhone side: ChatGPT with Apple Intelligence
On iPhone you connect ChatGPT as an extension to Apple Intelligence, which surfaces it through Siri and Writing Tools.
Settings → Apple Intelligence & Siri → ChatGPT, then turn it on. You can use it without a ChatGPT account; signing in links it to your plan.
Requirements, which are stricter than people expect: Apple Intelligence on iOS 27 or later, on an Apple Intelligence-capable iPhone — iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, or iPhone 16 and later. A current iOS version on an older device does not unlock it.
What this gets you in Messages is Writing Tools: rewriting a drafted message, changing its tone, proofreading. You are still writing and sending the message yourself.
On version numbers
Apple released iOS 27 on 14 September 2026. Guides still citing iOS 18.1 as the requirement are describing the era when Apple Intelligence first shipped, and the device requirements have moved since. Check your version under Settings → General → About before troubleshooting anything else.
Privacy: what leaves your device
This deserves more than a reassuring sentence, because the Mac plugin has genuinely broad reach.
Granting the Apple Messages plugin access means ChatGPT can read conversations in that app — including messages from people who never agreed to any of this. Your correspondents cannot consent on their own behalf here, and that is a reasonable thing to weigh before enabling it on a machine that holds sensitive threads.
Apple’s and OpenAI’s integrations handle data under their own published terms, and OpenAI documents separately how data is handled when you use ChatGPT through Apple’s integrations. Read that rather than inferring it — the Apple Intelligence path and the desktop plugin path are different systems with different data flows.
For managed devices, workspace admins can disable the Apple Messages plugin through the existing Computer Use control.
Troubleshooting
| Symptom | Cause |
|---|---|
| Messages plugin not listed | Intel Mac, or the desktop app is out of date |
| Plugin present but sees no conversations | macOS permission was declined — check System Settings → Privacy & Security |
| No ChatGPT option on iPhone | Device is not Apple Intelligence-capable, regardless of iOS version |
| Messages send without asking | The approval setting was turned off — turn it back on |
| Plugin unavailable on a work account | Disabled by an admin via Computer Use controls |
