Cloudflare’s 2026 Founders’ Letter: Agents Overtook Human Web Traffic in May
Cloudflare's 2026 Founders' Letter says automated traffic overtook human traffic in May 2026, and warns agents could reach 1,000x human traffic in five years.
Automated traffic passed human traffic on the Internet in May 2026, Cloudflare co-founders Matthew Prince and Michelle Zatlyn wrote in the company’s 2026 Annual Founders’ Letter, published September 27, 2026, as Cloudflare marked its 16th birthday. The company had originally forecast that crossover for the second half of 2027.
“The rise of agents and AI crawlers pulled that date forward to May of 2026,” the founders wrote. They added that if current trends continue — “which, if anything, seems conservative” — automated traffic will be 1,000 times human traffic in just five years, driven by agent traffic rather than a decline in people online.
Cloudflare says more than 7 million developers now build on its developer platform, and that the majority of “vibe coding” tools use it as their preferred deployment target. The letter credits those tools with a new cohort of creators — people with ideas but without coding skills — for an explosion of new websites starting in mid-2025, after the web had plateaued and by some measures shrunk from 2012 through 2025. The founders push back on the idea that AI “slop” explains most of that growth.
Agents read a thousand menus, one restaurant gets the order
The letter frames the economics of agents as a tragedy-of-the-commons problem. Ask an AI agent where to eat lunch, and it may survey 1,000 restaurant menus in the area to suggest one. That restaurant gets the business, but the other 999 served the agent “without getting anything in return,” the founders wrote, while the users benefiting from the agents don’t bear the cost of the load.
The same dynamic worries Cloudflare for small businesses. A local deli wins customers because the person at the counter remembers your name, or a shop survives because it sits on your drive home. “Your agent doesn’t care who remembers your name, and it isn’t driving home past the local store,” Prince and Zatlyn wrote. Agents go with whatever they have the most information about — usually whoever has been around the longest.
The letter is a statement of position rather than a product announcement, and it does not list pricing or availability for anything new. Cloudflare published it on its blog on September 27, 2026; the full post is available on the company’s site.
