Android Studio Adds Support For Third-Party Coding Agents

Bring Your Own Agent Arrives in Android Studio Canary

Google has announced a new Bring Your Own Agent (BYOA) feature for Android Studio, enabling developers to integrate external coding assistants directly into the development environment. Rolling out in the latest canary release, the update introduces native support for options including Anthropic’s Claude Agent, OpenAI’s Codex, and Google’s Antigravity.

This update expands on previous expansions that allowed various AI models within the IDE. By incorporating full Agent Client Protocol (ACP) compliance, the platform now lets developers connect specialized AI architectures while keeping workspace context centralized and secure.

How Native Integration Changes the Workflow

According to the vendor’s announcement, the integration leverages Android Studio’s infrastructure to supply full project graphs, build configurations, and platform specifics directly to the active agent. This architectural approach aims to optimize token usage and reduce latency by filtering relevant files before the model processes requests.

The system also injects native tool support, granting connected agents direct access to build diagnostics, Jetpack Compose Previews, Android SDK tools, and emulator controls. Agents can execute file modifications, run shell commands, handle tests, and delegate specialized subtasks while remaining tied to user-defined permission guardrails.

Options for Individual and Enterprise Developers

Developers can authenticate using their preferred consumer or enterprise plans, switching between agents if performance lags or quotas deplete. Google notes that users wanting the optimal Gemini experience can select the Google Antigravity agent—authenticating via Google AI Pro, Ultra, or Gemini Enterprise plans, or through pay-per-token API keys—while built-in Gemini options remain available.

To access the preview functionality, developers must update to the latest Android Studio canary release channel and configure their preferred assistant through the agent settings or registry.
