How to Generate and Edit Images in ChatGPT Images 2.5
A practical guide to prompting, reference images, Canvas comments, sketches, templates and sharing in ChatGPT Images 2.5.
ChatGPT Images 2.5 expands image generation around a simple workflow: describe what you need, review the result, then refine it with targeted instructions. OpenAI says the release improves editing precision, detail and generation speed while adding new ways to start, revise and share image work.
The available controls vary by product surface and account. The launch announcement covered templates, mobile sketches, full-screen editing, comments and prompt sharing; OpenAI’s current documentation also explains how prompts, reference images and Canvas revisions work.
Start with a concrete image prompt
OpenAI’s documentation says an image request can begin in the app composer. A useful prompt is often only one to three clear sentences, but it should name the details that determine whether the result succeeds: the image’s purpose, its main subject and action, the setting, composition, visual style and any important constraints.
The documented prompt details include purpose, subject, action, setting, composition, style and constraints. OpenAI says to prefer concrete visual language over broad reactions and to repeat any requirement that must remain fixed.
Add a reference image when words are not enough
A reference image can be attached when ChatGPT should transform an existing asset or use it as visual guidance. The instruction should separate the requested change from the elements that must remain intact. OpenAI’s guidance for edits is direct: state exactly what should change and what should stay the same.
OpenAI recommends small, targeted revisions and adjusting one element at a time so the composition and other important details do not drift.
Review and refine in the image viewer
Selecting a generated image opens the expanded viewer. OpenAI documents a Focused view for inspecting one image and a Canvas view for the images generated in the same chat.
In Canvas view, Comment can add precise feedback to one or more images. Multi-select chooses which images the feedback applies to, after which comments and additional editing instructions can be sent in the same chat. OpenAI recommends making small, targeted revisions so unrelated parts of the composition do not drift.
Images 2.5 also introduced full-screen editing and comments as part of the release. The documented editing guidance is to identify the requested change, state what must remain fixed and adjust one element at a time.
Use sketches, templates and shared prompts
The Images 2.5 announcement added a mobile sketch input that can be combined with a written instruction. OpenAI also announced reusable templates and prompt sharing, allowing another person to recreate or adapt an image workflow from its prompt.
The release therefore provides several documented inputs and controls: written prompts, reference images, mobile sketches, reusable templates, full-screen comments and shared prompts. Which of them appears depends on the product surface and account.
Check which controls are available
Availability was not identical everywhere at launch. OpenAI said templates were not available in Work mode at that point, while sketching and comment-based editing were described for mobile. Existing image-generation usage limits were unchanged by the launch.
The current official documentation says image availability and usage limits in ChatGPT depend on the plan and workspace settings. Before designing a repeatable workflow around a specific control, confirm that it appears in the account and surface being used.
