Android Games Move Beyond Beta for Car Screens and Dashboard Displays

Google Brings Android Games to Vehicles

Google has officially transitioned the games category for Android Auto and cars powered by Android Automotive OS with Google built-in from beta to general availability. Developers can now publish their Android games directly to open testing and production tracks through the Google Play Console.

This launch allows developers to reach vehicle occupants during natural periods of downtime, such as while waiting at a charging station or picking up curbside orders. Early access partners have already introduced titles to the ecosystem, and these can be browsed in dedicated collections on Google Play.

Technical Requirements for Car Integration

Adapting an existing title for vehicle displays requires specific manifest updates and compliance with safety rules. Developers must declare their software as a game by adding the appropriate attribute to the application element in their manifest file. Furthermore, support for Android Auto must be indicated using specific intent filter categories for devices running Android 15 and higher.

For Android Automotive OS, developers can declare compatibility through designated hardware feature tags. The platform also allows creators to signal optional or required game controller support, which helps improve visibility for users searching for gamepad-compatible titles in the store.

Managing Safety and Parked State Guidelines

Because vehicles introduce unique physical contexts, safety restrictions remain a primary focus. Games are classified as parked apps, meaning they are strictly prohibited from running while the vehicle is in motion to prevent driver distraction.

Android Auto and Android Automotive OS automatically block activities when a vehicle is moving or when user experience restrictions are active. Developers must ensure they omit specific distraction-optimized metadata tags and verify that all game audio halts immediately when driving begins. Additionally, apps must gracefully restore their previous state upon relaunch and adapt smoothly to various portrait or landscape screen resolutions without letterboxing.
