Android Can Transfer Passwords and Passkeys Without Export Files
Android’s new password-manager transfer flow moves passwords and passkeys directly between supported providers without plaintext export files.
Android is making it easier to change password managers without downloading a plaintext export file. Google’s new transfer experience can move passwords and passkeys directly between supported providers, reducing one of the riskiest steps in a traditional migration.
Older export workflows commonly create a CSV file containing credentials in readable form. That file may remain in Downloads, cloud backup or a recycle bin after the import. Direct transfer reduces that exposure and also addresses passkeys, which previously often had to be recreated site by site.
How the transfer starts
Google says the process begins inside the new password-manager app. Choose its import or copy option, select the previous provider and follow the authentication prompts. The exact labels depend on the two apps because each provider implements its side of the transfer.
Both password managers need to support Android’s new experience. If the option is missing, update Android, Google Play system components and both manager apps through their official stores. A missing button can also mean that one provider has not enabled transfers yet.
What to check after moving
Do not immediately delete the old vault. First, verify that a representative set of logins appears in the new manager, including accounts with multiple usernames, secure notes and passkeys. Test several sign-ins and confirm that the new provider is selected as Android’s preferred autofill and passkey service.
Once the migration is confirmed, follow the old provider’s documented process for removing local data or closing the account. If a fallback CSV export was necessary, delete every copy after import and empty the relevant trash or recycle location.
Direct transfer improves safety, not trust automatically
A safer migration path does not decide which provider is appropriate. Compare encryption design, recovery options, supported platforms, export capability and account protections. Enable strong authentication on the new vault and store its recovery material somewhere separate from the phone.
