The Complete Self-Hosting Starter Guide

Self-hosting gives you more control over your services and data, but it also makes you responsible for updates, backups, security and recovery. This guide provides a sensible route from an empty machine to a maintainable homelab.

Choose the foundation

Start with hardware that can run continuously and that you can recover without specialist parts. Proxmox is a useful foundation when you want virtual machines and containers on one host. Read the beginner’s Proxmox installation guide before deciding how to divide storage and networking.

Add services one at a time

Begin with one service, document it and back it up before adding another. Useful starting points include WordPress with Docker Compose, n8n inside a Proxmox LXC and remote access through Cloudflare Tunnel.

Plan recovery before expansion

A working service is not finished until you know how to restore it. Use the Docker homelab backup guide and test recovery on a non-production copy. Record addresses, volumes, secrets locations and restart order.

Security baseline

Restrict administrative interfaces, keep software updated, separate public services from management access and review the WordPress hardening checklist where applicable.

Download the preflight checklist

Download the homelab preflight checklist (CSV) before changing networking, storage or production services.
