Raspberry Pi raises 2GB Pi 4 and Pi 5 prices by $12.50 as memory costs climb

Raspberry Pi has raised the price of its 2GB boards by $12.50, effective today. The 2GB Raspberry Pi 4 now costs $67.50, and the 2GB Raspberry Pi 5 is $77.50, according to the company’s announcement.

The increase follows a round of hikes in April, when Raspberry Pi says it was able to hold the line on the 1GB and 2GB Raspberry Pi 4 and Raspberry Pi 5 while raising prices on higher-density variants. That approach, the company says, “has now become unsustainable.”

Prices for other products are unchanged, including the 1GB versions of the Raspberry Pi 4 and Raspberry Pi 5 and the 2GB Compute Module 4 and Compute Module 5.

Why prices went up

Raspberry Pi attributes the move to memory costs, which it says have “risen very steeply over the past two years and continues to increase.” The company says it has had to raise prices on many products to keep up with production costs, and that the current memory supply situation is “very challenging.”

It also expects the situation to be temporary: “The price of memory will eventually subside, and we look forward to reversing our own price increases when it does.”

What Raspberry Pi suggests buyers do

The company is nudging customers to check whether they are paying for RAM they don’t need. It points to older boards — the Raspberry Pi 3B, 3A+ and 3B+ — as options that may deliver the performance a project requires at a lower cost, and notes that Raspberry Pi Official Magazine has published guidance on making the most of memory, including project ideas for the 1GB Raspberry Pi 5.

Raspberry Pi also repeats its warning to buy only from Raspberry Pi Approved Resellers, which it says abide by its published maximum prices. The company says there are more than a hundred such resellers across every continent except Antarctica, several of which ship worldwide, and that some unauthorised vendors are using inflated pricing or supplying products that aren’t what they seem.

If you’re shopping for a 2GB Raspberry Pi 4 or Raspberry Pi 5, the new prices apply from today through Approved Resellers; the 1GB boards and 2GB Compute Modules stay at their previous pricing.
