Walmart is Finally Adding Apple Pay: Rollout Timeline & How to Use It

Walmart is finally adding Apple Pay and Google Pay to its stores. Find out when your local store will get the upgrade and how to use it.

Walmart is Finally Adding Apple Pay: Rollout Timeline & How to Use It

After years of accepting only its own Walmart Pay, Walmart is adding contactless payments at checkout. Announced 21 August 2026, the rollout began 24 August 2026 at select Walmart stores and Sam’s Club locations.

What Walmart actually announced

Worth being precise here, because coverage and the company’s own wording differ.

Walmart’s announcement is about Tap to Pay — contactless payment at the terminal — rather than a deal with any single wallet. In Walmart’s framing, Tap to Pay “gives customers and members another familiar and convenient way to pay at checkout using contactless payment methods”, alongside existing options like cash, credit card and Walmart Pay.

In practice, a terminal that accepts contactless accepts the NFC wallets that ride on the same standard: Apple Pay, Google Pay and Samsung Pay, plus contactless cards and smartwatches. That is why headlines say “Apple Pay” while Walmart’s own release says “Tap to Pay”. Both are accurate; the company described the capability, the press described the consequence.

The timeline

Date What happens
21 August 2026 Announced
24 August 2026 Rollout begins at select Walmart and Sam’s Club locations
End of 2026 Target for all US stores and clubs
Mid-2027 Target for Walmart fuel stations

The rollout is phased by region, so whether it works today depends on your store rather than on your phone. If it fails at one location and works at another, that is the rollout, not a fault with your device.

How to use it

  1. Add your card to your wallet app if you have not already
  2. At checkout, wait for the terminal to prompt for payment
  3. Hold the phone or watch near the contactless symbol on the terminal
  4. Authenticate — Face ID, Touch ID, or your watch passcode

You can also add eligible Walmart, Sam’s Club and OnePay cards to your digital wallet, which is the part that most affects people already inside Walmart’s payment ecosystem.

Walmart Pay is not going away

Walmart Pay, which works by scanning a QR code in the Walmart app, continues to operate. The difference in practice:

Tap to Pay Walmart Pay
Needs the Walmart app No Yes
How it works NFC at the terminal QR code in the app
Card number shared with the merchant No — tokenised by the wallet Handled in Walmart’s app
Works at other retailers Yes No

That third row is the substantive reason many people wanted this. With a tokenised NFC wallet the merchant receives a device-specific token rather than your actual card number, so a breach of merchant systems does not expose the card itself.

Why it took this long

The hardware was rarely the obstacle — most modern terminals support contactless. Walmart’s holdout was strategic: Walmart Pay keeps customers inside Walmart’s app, where the company controls the relationship and the data. Accepting third-party wallets trades some of that for checkout convenience.

Read against Walmart’s broader push into financial services with OnePay, adding Tap to Pay while promoting its own cards inside those same wallets looks less like a reversal and more like meeting customers where they already are.

Troubleshooting

Symptom Likely cause
Terminal does not respond to your phone Your store has not been enabled yet — phased rollout
Works at Walmart, not at the fuel station Expected — fuel stations are targeted for mid-2027
Payment declines but the card works elsewhere Card not enabled for contactless, or a wallet-side limit
Prompted to scan a QR code instead That is Walmart Pay — look for the contactless symbol instead
