Raspberry Pi Guide to Retro Gaming: £9.99 introductory price, out now
Raspberry Pi Press has released the Raspberry Pi Guide to Retro Gaming, covering emulation, arcade builds and CRT setups, at an introductory price of £9.99.
Raspberry Pi Press has released the Raspberry Pi Guide to Retro Gaming, a new book covering emulation, arcade builds and CRT setups on Raspberry Pi hardware. It is out now at an introductory price of £9.99, down from £19.99.
The book is written largely by Rob, the Raspberry Pi staffer who announced it on the company blog, with contributions from Publishing Director Brian Jepson, retro gaming expert K.G. Orphanides and Sean McManus.
What’s inside
According to Raspberry Pi, the guide opens with a quick-start section aimed at getting readers gaming as fast as possible. It then walks through the emulation operating systems available for Raspberry Pi and what each individual Raspberry Pi computer can handle.
Jepson, a volunteer at the Rhode Island Computer Museum, wrote tutorials on emulating roughly a dozen computers from the 8- and 16-bit era, plus a few early 32-bit systems. The book also covers DOSBox Staging, described by Raspberry Pi as a fork of the original DOSBox.
For readers who want to go deeper, Orphanides wrote a section on tweaking emulation settings and shows how to build a full arcade machine and connect old CDs, floppy disks and DB9 joysticks to a modern Raspberry Pi. Rob and Orphanides also put together a guide to legal ROMs sold on digital stores such as Steam and GOG, and the book touches on the homebrew scene.
There is a hardware section too: Rob and Jepson look at running a Raspberry Pi on CRT displays and old televisions using Raspberry Pi add-ons. Raspberry Pi notes that many retro games were designed around scanlines and other quirks of old screens, and that a classic PS2 light gun can be used with them.
Finally, McManus shows how to program games on a ZX Spectrum via an emulator, with listings readers can type out. Unlike the magazines of the 1980s, the code is also available online for download.
Where to buy it
The guide can be ordered from the Raspberry Pi store online at the £9.99 introductory price. It is also listed on Amazon UK and Amazon US, and is stocked at the official Raspberry Pi Store in Cambridge.
