Python Workers Reach General Availability

Cloudflare has officially transitioned Python Workers to general availability, establishing Python as a first-class language on its developer platform. The release allows developers to execute Python code, libraries, and design patterns directly within the edge runtime and connect them to services like Workers AI, R2, and D1.

Previously available as a preview feature, the environment now includes native support for platform bindings and web frameworks. This milestone removes early development roadblocks by allowing applications to run closer to end-users without traditional server configurations.

Native Bindings and Framework Support

The updated runtime eliminates the need for manual type conversion glue code between Python and JavaScript environments. Developers can now utilize Cloudflare bindings directly through a Pythonic interface without writing explicit translation logic.

In addition, the platform introduces built-in connectors for popular asynchronous and synchronous web frameworks such as FastAPI, Django, and Flask. By mapping incoming requests directly to WSGI and ASGI standards, applications can leverage the platform’s global network routing without maintaining a dedicated web server instance.

Database Connectivity and Ecosystem Expansion

Python Workers now support low-level socket operations routed through the platform’s connect API, enabling database drivers to interact with external services. This update allows relational databases like PostgreSQL and MySQL to integrate via Hyperdrive inside WebAssembly sandboxes.

To widen package compatibility, the initiative adopts the PyEmscripten standard to help package maintainers cross-compile native C, C++, and Rust extensions for browser-based runtimes. This underlying expansion lets developers run machine learning and AI orchestration tools, including LangChain and native HTTP clients, directly at the edge.
