Google Brings Gemini Personal Intelligence to Android Auto and Cars
Google is rolling out Gemini with Personal Intelligence to Android Auto and cars with Google built-in, enabling hands-free access to Google Workspace, Photos, and Maps.
Google has launched Gemini on Android Auto and cars with Google built-in worldwide, introducing Personal Intelligence features designed for hands-free driving assistance. The rollout begins today for Android Auto and will expand to cars with Google built-in over the coming months, affecting eligible personal account holders globally.
With Personal Intelligence enabled, Gemini integrates with connected Google apps including Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Photos, Google Maps, YouTube, and Search. The system is designed to retrieve specific details across multiple sources and reason through complex requests so drivers can speak naturally without looking up information manually.
Practical Capabilities on the Road
The updated assistant allows drivers to combine queries, such as checking a flight gate and flight status simultaneously from a confirmation email without separate searches. Users can also request personalized local recommendations based on their usual preferences, navigate directly to destinations mentioned in recent photos, or say phrases like “take me to my doctor’s appointment” to route without entering a street address.
Privacy and Availability Limits
Personal Intelligence requires manual opt-in through Gemini settings and can be turned off at any time. For cars with Google built-in, personal responses are only shared when the user is in the vehicle with their phone connected. Standard car features like navigation, music playback, calls, and general questions remain functional even if Personal Intelligence is disabled.
The feature is restricted to eligible personal Google accounts for users aged 18 and older. It is currently unavailable for Workspace business, enterprise, or education accounts. Furthermore, the rollout excludes the European Economic Area, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and Nigeria.
